Carmelina was interviewed by her son, Alberto, on camera through the course of three years (2015-2017) documenting her memories about her ancestors and her life in Cuba. Carmelina speaks about her earliest childhood recollections of family life, school, her first job, life as a single woman, marriage to Alfredo Manrara, birth of her children and the couple’s exile to the United States in 1960 with six young children.
The structure of the film consists of thematic sequences based on Carmelina’s life as told by her. Recollections from her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and in-laws frame the narrative, giving it depth and moving the story forward.
Their comments blend with Carmelina’s memories and provide a multi-generational window of the family history.
Home videos, family photos, period images and archival footage offer visual references to the historical chronology of the family and complement the video interviews.
The Cuban period music is courtesy of Cuban musician and pianist Enrique Chia. Contemporary musical arrangements by Carmelina’s grandson, Alvaro Marin Manrara, accompany the film.

The film “Carmelina: Memories of A Generation” was seen for the first time on October 2, 2021. The film’s premiere was held at the Coral Gables Art Cinema. The web platform includes a video that captures the historical event for the over 120 invited family and guests who attended. After the film’s premiere a reception was hosted at the theater.
The Manrara Family History Video and Web Platform is based on Carmelina’s recollections, the matriarch of the Manrara Gastón family.
